Join Hands Day 2006

Saturday, May 19, 2007, marked the 8th "Join Hands Day” project for the Cleveland District. It was a great success because many Junior Members and their families from the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association participated along with many of our adult members.

Staff members from the Light of Hearts Villa, Janet Kodrich, Sue Timmons, Sr. Helen Therese Scansy, SC and Sr. Regina Kusnir, SC worked together with FCSLA members, Barbara Sekerak, Joyce Lechman, Dr. Deborah Brindza and Chris Kiggins in the planning of the project.

The project consisted of cleaning and beautifying the grounds at the Light of Hearts Villa. The volunteers cleared away old leaves and brush from flower beds, removed weeds, and planted shrubs and flowers. Several FCSLA members hosted bingo games, which were enjoyed by many residents of the Villa. The project also included collection of food items for the Seton Safety Net, which is the Community Outreach Service provided by the Sisters of Charity, there in Bedford, Ohio.

Another outdoor bench was donated to the Villa by the Cleveland District. The residents like to sit on these benches when they stroll outdoors to enjoy the waterfall by the pond.

When the work was completed, everyone came together for a brief prayer service. Fr. Gerard Gonda OSB opened with prayer, and Melissa Lagzdins did the first reading. Petitions were presented by Ryan Lagzdins, Augusta Lucas, Patrick Hawk, Danny Talpas and Susan Talpas. Everyone joined in prayer, followed by Sr . Helen Therese Scansy, SC who did the closing prayer—after which everyone released the helium filled balloons, each carrying a note saying, "If found, please call Light of Hearts Villa." The phone number for the villa was on the note.

Joseph Lagzdins and Kim Nadolski were awarded prizes in the "Name the Fish Contest," and about two dozen fish were added to the pool.

Volunteers and residents were treated to a light lunch of pizza, soft drinks and cake. Bedford Council person, Marilyn Zolata expressed the City's appreciation while the residents and staff of the Light of Hearts Villa expressed their thanks and appreciation as well, thus ending another successful "Join Hands Day" event!
