Join Hands Day 2006

Branches S161 and J192 of the Maria E. Grega District in Youngstown, Ohio joined hands with Saint Matthias Slovak Catholic Youth Ministry on Friday, April 18, 2008 for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life. Representatives from both groups met at 6:00 at Youngstown State University's Kilcawley Sports Center for the opening ceremony. A walk-a-thon began and continued through the night until noon the next day. All participants slept at the facility and took part in games, dancing, and watching movies on a giant screen.

The Youth Ministry had committed $2,000 in donations for the event. S161 donated $300 and J192 donated $200 to help them achieve their goal. The youth, many members of J192, had worked for weeks holding car washes and a pancake breakfast. They sold candy, candles and luminaries and had sponsors for their portion of the walk. At the event, additional money was raised through a gift basket raffle. A gift basket filled with $25 worth of Ohio Lottery tickets was donated by Branch S161.

S161 Vice President, Virginia DeLuca, also serves as Youth Ministry Coordinator and is assisted by another branch member, Melanie Leonard. In addition to the "Youth Ministry" sign, the participants carried a "Saint Elizabeth Branch 161, FCSLA" sign to show it was a joint effort.
